30 days of dining in- Day 16

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

16 days of not eating out...sounds simple enough, right? In all honesty, it's been great. There's a whole slew of great things about this project, but here's a few of my favorites:

1. I'm watching what I eat more. Am I on a "diet"? No. But I do have a very good idea of how many calories, etc. I'm eating every day because I'm preparing nearly all of my meals (with the exception of the occasional microwave meals I have for lunch). I feel better, and I can say that my clothes are definitely fitting a little looser than right after the holidays. Bonus!

2. I'm getting rid of the stuff in my pantry/freezer that's been sitting around for a while. Everybody has it- that bottle of sweet and sour chicken mix that you've bought 3 months ago with the best intentions, yet never got around to making. Well my friends, that is on my meal plan for this week. Being a couponer you tend to develop a stockpile of stuff that unfortunately sometimes goes to waste because you can't get around to using it before it goes bad. I am starting to scrounge a little bit, but that's really a good thing. After this project my pantry is getting a nice organization overhaul. Plus it's forcing me to be creative.

3. My bank account is thanking me - big time. I really didn't expect that after the first two weeks I'd have almost $500 more than I usually do. I had done the math and knew we were spending a ridiculous amount of money eating out, but I was still shocked when I balanced my checkbook. If we keep this up we can be completely debt free (aside from the mortgage and boat) in about 2 more months. Is that worth the time it takes for me to plan, shop, and cook each day? Absolutely.

I have to admit, we cheated just a teensy bit. I took a friend out to lunch at Panera last week for her birthday (cost was about $17) and we did have a few drinks/appetizers out with friends this past weekend (around $40). I feel a little guilty about it, but we are right back on track now. Maybe I'll just have to make it up next month. :)

Can you eat out for free?? NO- but here's how to save some cash!

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

This post has nothing to do with sushi. I just really like sushi. A lot.

If you've been following my posts you already know that hubby and I are doing 30 days of no dining out. We're on day...9? 10 maybe? I'd have to go check the date of my day 1 post to be sure. Anywho, all this not dining out got me thinking...is it possible to dine out for free?

After several days of painstaking research, the answer is no- unless you're a celebrity or something. Until this blog blows up, and I mean to Brangelina proportions and people pay me to eat in their restaurants, somebody is footing the bill. Being the sweet person that I am, I compiled a little list of ways to take treat yourself to dinner without having to file Chapter 11.

Here's a list of some of my favorite chain restaurants and the discount clubs they offer:

Ruby Tuesday - So Connected Club: Sign up for their email club and they'll sporadically send you coupons for all sorts of stuff- a couple I've gotten are free handcrafted burger on your birthday, and a free garden bar with entree purchase (I know, it's $2- but hey, if we all saved $2 a day for a year we'd have $730...a year).

TGIFriday's Give Me More Stripes: These guys get all fancy- sign up and they'll send you a coupon for a free appetizer or dessert and...wait for it....a freaking jump the line pass! That's right, you heard me! You're rollin' straight VIP at Friday's!! In addition, you get a card that earns you $8 in free food for every $100 you spend, and maybe a lil something nice on your birthday. Baller.

Moes e World: WELCOME TO MOES...e World. Here you'll get something for signing up, a treat on your birthday, and a reminder about $5.55 burrito Mondays.

Chik-fil-A: Sign up heer to ressev speshul offerz, promoshuns, and nooz frum the cowz.

The Pita Pit PIT Card: Earn free food by earning points on the card. $1 spent = 1 point earned on the card. Here's an example of what you can get:

Standard Pita / Fork Style 90 Points
6” Pita / Kids Pita 70 Points
32 oz Fountain Drink 30 Points
Bag of Chips 15 Points
Fresh Baked Cookie 10 Points

So only $90 spent and you'll have earned yourself a FREE Pita! Deal of the century!! :)

Aside from chain restaurants, you can get awesome deals through Restaurants.com, like $25 gift certificates for as low as $2 with the promo codes they release frequently. Typically, these are $25 on a $35 purchase, so you're really spending $12 for a $35 meal, but that's a significant savings! This website is legit and the gift certificates do work- I've used them. Just a word of caution- booze is typically excluded, so you can't go have a liquid lunch of 7 martinis for $12. I've tried.

Another way to get deals at restaurants is to "Like" them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter- a lot of companies are jumping on the viral marketing strategy, and doing promos/giveaways to attract attention. Go like 5 of your favorite places now!

And least, but not least, if you have already signed up for Groupon then just stop reading now because you already know the incredible deals that are delivered in your inbox every day. If you have not signed up for Groupon yet- do it now by clicking here! As a matter of fact, today's Tampa deal is $12 for $25 Worth of Seafood and More Friday-Sunday (or $30 Worth of Seafood and More Monday-Thursday) at Palm Pavilion in Clearwater Beach - you don't have to be Albert Einstein to see what a savings that is!

Enjoy all of your yummy savings!

My meal plan for the week

Making a meal plan helps me stay on track for the 30 days of dining out. Ryan and I have decided to start going to the gym after work on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well, so I'll need to plan to make things that are either quick and easy or that I've made ahead so they can be reheated quickly.

With most of these meals, I make enough to have leftovers for lunch the following day.

Here's what we're doing this week:

Sunday: Pork Chops, Rice, Brussel Sprouts, Salad

Monday: Garlic Alfredo Tilapia, pasta, salad

Tuesday: Slow cooker chicken and dumplings, broccoli

Wednesday: (Ryan's night to cook) Steak, Roasted potatoes, spinach

Thursday: Chicken Stir Fry, Rice, salad with ginger dressing

Friday: Veggie Burgers, fries

Saturday: Taco Pie

30 days of dining in- Days 5 & 6

As promised, here's a little more info about our wing party (which was a blast and a half!). A group of friends had originally talked about going to Buffalo Wild Wings this weekend to hang out. Typically, when we go there the tab for Ryan and I averages $40-$50 with food and drinks- I just know we could do much better than that.

My bestie and I sorted out who would buy what and we got down to business. I picked up two 4 lb bags of tyson frozen chicken wings at around $9 each. In addition to wings I picked up 20 jalapenos (around $2), a couple blocks of cream cheese (again around $2), a package of bacon (around $3), and Some sauce ingredients (around $2).

We had decided on making 5 sauces- Regular Buffalo (medium), a chipotle, parmesan garlic, nuclear, and spicy asian.

For the chipotle, I just blended a bottle of the Louisiana wing sauce with half a can of chipotles in adobo and a few dashes of chipotle tabasco sauce- it was so good and so spicy!!

For the poppers, half and scrape out the seeds/membranes of about 20 jalapenos. Combine 2 packages of cream cheese with a few tablespoons of ranch dressing mix. mix together in a ziplock bag until well blended, them clip the corner of the bag and fill the jalapenos. Wrap with half a slice of bacon, and bake at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes. YUM!

All in all we had a fantastic time- and the average cost per person (we had 6 people) was about $6 each- WAY cheaper then going out for wings and beer!!

30 days of dining in- Day 4

Thursday, January 6, 2011

So far it's been smooth sailing! I made a meal plan and I take a few minutes every night to make sure I prep/thaw what I need for the next day and that we have something for lunch in the event we didn't have leftovers.

We were supposed to go to Buffalo Wild Wings with our friends this weekend, but I convinced them all to do a wings and beer party at our house instead. My bestie and I are making 4 different kinds of wings- regular, chipotle, parmesan garlic, and nuclear. In addition to that we're having homemade jalapeno poppers, celery and bleu cheese. I'll post more about the party and the cost vs. cost of going out to eat this weekend.

I stopped by Publix tonight, and with my coupons spent $24 and saved $22. So far, my total savings at Publix this week comes out to around $70. Combined with 4 days of eating in at an average of $5 a day x 2 people, that's $90 in our pocket!
